Open Custody

Our Island Road Open Custody program removes teens from their communities and any negative influences, replacing them with personalized education and guidance for the chance to fix their mistakes and successfully reintegrate with the ability to handle all of life’s challenges.

Island Road Open Custody

Young men in detention or custody use their time here to reflect, learn, and prepare to reintegrate into their community.

Island Road is a supervised home for up to 8 young men sent to Fernie by a judge. During their stay with us, the youth participate in programming to face the behaviours that led them here and change their actions going forward.

Voluntary programming includes employment preparation, onsite schooling with the Toronto District School Board, an onsite music recording studio to creatively refocus emotions and energy, anger management, and financial literacy. These are just a few options available to youth at our Open Custody facility to address the root causes of a teen’s conflict with the law, preventing future issues and promoting their success as community leaders.

All services are provided in an inclusive, non-discriminatory environment that appreciates ethnocultural, racial, linguistic, and ancestral diversity. This includes the provision of services under the French Language Services Act. Employee orientation and ongoing trainings enhance staff knowledge of these services, along with regular consultation with local community groups and associations.

We see success

Youth grow with their environment, the better the community supports the better the outcome. Read about some youth who have made a commitment to change.

Be the Change

There are many ways to join our community of change - donate, give, participate - be a partner in changing a youth’s story from ‘could have been’ to ‘look at me now’.
