Samir

A young man who went through Beat Builders and Fernie Works, finding connection and purpose and now on a path of purposeful living.

“Fernie Works not only taught me everything in that moment, it helped lead me to whereI’m headed now, and I’m excited”

Samir was first referred to Fernie to join Beat Builders because of a lifelong interest in music. Always calling himself an artist but never having the opportunity to use a professional recording studio, Samir found his first time in the program inspiring, opening his eyes to the opportunity in front of him. Working with artists he looked up to, Samir describes Beat Builders as an experience that brought out a new side of him.  “Time didn’t move the same” he explains, sharing how the studio was a safe space for him during difficult times.

During his time at Beat Builders, one of our youth workers encouraged Samir to apply for Fernie Works as a summer job. He did, and though he didn’t know it at the time, a summer of self-discovery was right around the corner.

“It was really impactful for me, to create

a family outside my family”

The most experience Samir had with lawncare before Fernie Works was cutting the grass in his mom’s yard. He had a lot to learn, but the program taught him more than just landscaping. With the Fernie Works crew at his side, he learned about synergy in a team, positive masculinity, professional responsibility, and of course, horticulture and landscaping techniques. He describes the Fernie Works curriculum as “holistic” explaining that even when you’re learning about plants and gardening, you’re also learning personal lessons that are the building blocks for a successful life.

“You guys are actively changing the community . . .

we really need you”

Before coming to Fernie, Samir didn’t think there were places where he could get the help he needed. This is a common sentiment among youth – that meaningful support can be hard to find and access, especially if you don’t know where to look. Fernie showed him that there are people who would work with him to help him find his path to success, not only in employment, but in becoming the man he wants to be.

“I feel like you guys set me up on a trampoline . . .

I came through Fernie and it propelled me”

After Fernie Works ended, Samir worked with our team to find an education program he was interested in, leading directly into employment. In addition, he’s working with one of our youth workers on an environmental micro-grant he received! He’s now working full-time in IT while furthering his passion for the environment working on his ‘InTO the Ravines’ project. Samir is now a regular face at Fernie, and we’re excited to see where his passion and dedication bring him in the future.
